The S-matrix theory, proposed by Wheeler and Heisenberg, became a powerful approach to quantum field theory and renormalization in Lorentzian spacetime, after Stueckelberg and Bogoliubov realized how to take causality into account. It turned out to be the correct framework to describe quantum field theory in curved spacetime. Starting from a simple example, the renormalization of the S-matrix will be described. In particular, a large renormalization group will appear, which describes the way to change the interaction Hamiltonian of the system.
