Title: A dynamic model of circadian rhythms in rodent tail skin temperature time series

Menopause-associated thermoregulatory dysfunction can lead to hot flushes, which can severely impair womens' quality of life. As a consequence, medical treatment is required in order to offer relief in severe cases. For assessing the effectiveness of new drug candidates in hot flush treatment, the ovariectomized (OVX) rat model can be used. Treatment effects are described using time series which consist of tail skin temperature (TST) measurements. Fundamental constituents of TST time series are circadian rhythms, which provide hints on the integrity of the rat's thermoregulatory processes.

In the presented work, a new statistical strategy is proposed for analysing such stochastic dynamic data. The circadian component is represented by a nonlinear dynamical system. It is defined by the van der Pol equation describing self-driven oscillations which can exhibit limit cycles. Statistical evaluation of model parameters is performed by various statistical test strategies including bootstrap methods. Different hypothesis pairs are investigated in order to detect successful substances and to quantify achieved treatment effects.
