Crowding, the physical occupation of a considerable fraction of the ambient volume, is a typical feature of many biological and soft matter systems. Thus, in biological cells larger biomolecules take up some 35-40% of the cytoplasm, giving rise to viscoelastic features. Due to the cytoskeletal architecture of semiflexible proteins additional constraints arise for a molecule or tracer particle moving in cells. Similarly, in gels the network of the gel architecture causes obstacles for larger tracer particles. Indeed, in both cases deviations from standard Brownian motion have been observed in a variety of systems. Such anomalous diffusion reduces diffusional exchange over larger distances. In some cases test particles may become immobilised over long time periods, causing effects such as breaking of ergodicity and ageing. In the talk both the systems as well as the concepts and the concequences of anomalous diffusion will be discussed and compared to experimental data.
