Title: Exciton Dynamics in Open Quantum System - from Quantum to Random Walks * Colloquium on Complex and Biological Systems

Transport process lie at the core of many physical, chemical, or biological phenomena. In this talk I will discuss how such processes can be described on the basis of basic network models, where the networks consist of interacting entities over which the transport of energy or charge takes place. Prominent examples of such networks are the light-harvesting complexes in the photosynthetic units where recent experiments suggest that quantum mechanical aspects are important. Another example are ultracold Rydberg gases. Although both examples seem to have only little in common, I will show that on a phenomenological level there is a strong connection between the two. Further I will discuss a particular type of quantum master equation by which it is possible to cover transport processes from being fully incoherent (random walks) to those being fully coherent (quantum walks). This will be illustrated by other examples. In particular, I will compare this approach to numerically exact Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations for the so-called Fenna-Matthews-Olsen complex of green sulphur bacteria.
