Title: Computation and programming language for spiking neural networks * Oberseminar Nichtlineare Dynamik

We introduce a computational framework for computing with spiking neural network with recurrent connections. The goal of this framework to describe computation using neural activity at a higher level. We propose a two-tiered abstract computational framework: at low level (hardware) the basic building blocks are biologically realistic neurons; and at a higher level, we propose a programming language with oscillation based constructs. At the low-level, we provide a simple abstract machine models which has properties of the spiking neuron and its networks. We show computational equivalence between the machine model and Turing machines, Hopfield networks and analog recurrent neural networks. We then introduce the programming language, which only allows operations on oscillations or spike time series. The programming language will facilitate programming paradigms corresponding to activity in the underlying network that closely resemble the activity observed in experiments. The programs can be compiled into biologically realistic networks of neurons. Finally, we provide several case studies of some models of neural computation and show the framework can successfully capture such models.
