Title: Cosmic-Ray Neutrons in Environmental Science * Colloquium on Complex and Biological Systems

Since the discovery of cosmic radiation in 1912, scientists have been curious about their origin as well as the information they carry about the farthest places of our universe. However, cosmic rays can also tell stories about Earth itself, as they have substantially influenced and still influence our everyday life. In the last decades astrophysicists and geochronologists have accumulated profound knowledge about cosmic radiation in space and on Earth, and it is about time to make use of it on behalf of hydrology, environmental science, andthe society.

This talk shows how the measurement of cosmogenic neutrons can be used to detect changes of water content on Earth, and how this concept could be applied to advance climate model predictions and agricultural irrigation management. We will discuss several open questions and uncertainties involved in this method, such as the influence of solar activity, atmospheric properties, vegetation density, soil composition, different neutron energies, and detector design. To tackle some of these problems, a highly interdisciplinary group of researchers will work together in a DFG research unit “Cosmic Sense” led by the University of Potsdam. While the research initiative aims to advance the understanding of states and fluxes in the soil-plant-atmosphere system, it is first and foremost necessary to understand how neutrons interact with our environment.
